Beautiful hand-turned painted bowls by David Susag.

David turns wooden bowls on a spring pole lathe using hand forged tools. The lathe is a reciprocating lathe powered by entirely by David’s own strength, and the wood that he uses is fresh green wood. This turning technique dates back over a thousand years.

David says, “I have built the lathe and forged some of the tools myself. I am inspired by the ale bowls that I see in the Folk Museums in Norway and Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, IA.”

The constructed bowls are decorated with a food safe finish and are meant to be used.
